We all know how difficult it is to start a conversation with someone we don’t know but it is even more challenging in another language! At the best of times, we can be slightly nervous, but when we let those nerves take over, our brain shuts down and we cannot think of a word to say to the person sitting or standing next to us!
How can we unblock our minds and let the conversation flow naturally? By starting with small talk, those unobtrusive general questions that get the conversation flowing. The trick is to keep the questions short and simple. Don’t look for complicated vocabulary to show off how much English you know but rather connect to the person next to you.
