Going to an interview is one of the most nerve wracking moments we have to face in life. None of us likes being grilled about our skills and work experience. We feel vulnerable and on show and beads of perspiration can break out on our foreheads making us feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. How can we calm our nerves and feel more relaxed? The following tried and tested tips are sure to help!

1.Prepare

Research the organisation you are applying to. Know where they are located, know who you will be interviewing with and for how long. Read and study the job profile. See how your skills and abilities are relevant to the job you are applying for.

2.Practice

Do a role play at home with a family member/friend. Get them to be the Interviewer and you the Interviewee. Practice your handshake. Get them to constructively criticise you after. Listen and Learn

3.Punctual

Arrive 15 minutes early.

4.Positive

Smile, convey warmth and openness. Be interactive and maintain eye contact at all times.

5.Professional

Dress according to the job you are applying to. Be conservative. Cover tattoos or piercings. Do not wear too much cologne or perfume

6.Performance

Listen to the questions being asked and only answer what is being asked. Avoid going off in tangents or irrelevant chatter. Questions can be open ended i.e. Tell me about yourself or closed ended Do you have a driver’s license?

7.Provide examples

When asked about experience of managing a team etc., provide examples. Be specific and concrete. Be honest. Don’t over-exaggerate your experience.

8.Avoid

Never answer I don’t know. You can ask the interviewer to repeat the question to give you a little more time to think and come up with an answer

9.Finalise

Be prepared for the final question Why should I hire you? You will also be asked Have you any questions for me? Prepare questions to ask the interviewer that are relevant and engaging. For example How do you describe a typical week/day in this position? What are the possibilities of career advancement?

10.Pitfalls

Do not ask about pay, benefits or holidays until you are offered the job. Those questions might imply that you are only applying for the benefits. Never ask What does your company do? (Demonstrates lack of preparation and interest) Did I get the job? (Implies arrogance)

11.Follow up

2 weeks after the interview or whenever was suggested by the Interviewer. Make sure you have his/her contact information. It is recommended to send a Thank You email 24 hours after the interview. You should reiterate your interest in the position and why you are the best candidate for the job.

And most of all  GOOD LUCK!!
