Many students ask me if exams are important to measure their level of language. It is a good question and one which I will endeavour to answer. If you have managed to command a language to the extent that you can make yourself understood by a native, you have done well. But notice the word ´well´. Why didn´t I use very well or proficiently? Because making yourself understood doesn´t mean that you speak the language grammatically correct or use the most up to date vocabulary. You may just have the basics to get by. But a language is never stagnant, it is always evolving. A recent example is how the Spanish word Adios (goodbye) has now been superseded by the Italian word Ciao.

But where do exams fit in here?

Exams are a means to let you know what level you have reached. English exams must adhere to the CEFR (Common European Framework for Languages). There are levels that each student can reach starting at A1 level (Beginners) and reaching the highest level of a language which is C2 (Native). There is a system of study for each level with an appropriate Syllabus which covers the four essential language skills, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Each level is progressive and once you have successfully passed A1 level, you move up to the next level, A2 and so on. Cambridge and Trinity offer specific exams tailored to these levels.

And for those who do not want to sit an exam?

There is a place for everyone in language learning. If your objective is communication where the natives can understand you, there are Speaking courses available. A popular podcast is Coffee Break English where the Learner is introduced to a variety of themes and then asked to repeat the vocabulary learned. If you have just moved to an English-speaking country and this is your first time learning the language, it is an effective way to get used to listening to different accents and learn the correct pronunciation. Starting off at Beginner´s level, you can rapidly progress through the levels until you feel confident enough speaking to a native.

For me, the perfect test of measuring your level of language is whether a native can understand you or not. You may not have the perfect grammar, pronunciation or know the exact word you are trying to convey, but if a native gets what you are trying to say, you have succeeded! Natives are always pleased to see you trying and are happy to help you along the way. They may even offer you a language exchange free of charge. One hour of English in exchange for one hour of your native language. Not a bad option to get you started.

So, depending on your learning objective, exams may or may not be the right path for you. Whatever your goal, we all agree that effective communication is key. Make yourself understood and watch the doors open for you.
