Are you someone who gets up in the morning with the intention of learning something new in your day? Or are you the opposite? You get up in the morning, immerse yourself in your job or studies without giving a single thought to learning something new?

Learning a new language requires discipline of mind and a positive attitude to learning. Babies are lucky in this respect. They don´t need to try as it comes naturally to them. They assimilate language by association. For example, the word “Daddy” is associated with the word “work”, and they naturally form the sentence “Daddy go work”. Their grammar may not be perfect, but they make themselves understood!

However, for adults this is not the case. They need to make more of a conscious effort thinking about how they can express themselves using the correct grammar. In the sentence “Daddy go work”, the adult will have to say instead “My father has gone to work”. They will have learned in their language class the use of the present perfect “has gone” and the infinitive “to” to form the grammatically correct sentence.

So, for adults learning a new language requires focus and hard work but becoming proficient is so worth the effort!  And never forget, practice makes perfect!
