Linkers and Connectors are the glue that holds our sentences together. Some examples are: consequently, as a result, although, in spite of, furthermore, moreover, as well as etc. To help improve our writing, we must use these linking words appropriately. A text would not read properly if it didn’t have a variety of connectors running through it. When we link sentences together using the same staples such as because, so, and, we can bore our reader very quickly. To grab rather than lose their attention, here are a few tested and tried ideas:
1) Provide variety
For example: Instead of using because, try using since:
I didn’t go to work today because I felt sick.
Since I was feeling sick, I didn’t go to work today
2) Avoid using and all the time
For example: USE:
She writes novels as well as poetry
INSTEAD OF:
They robbed a bank and a post office
3) Use alternatives that mean the same thing
For example: To signify a result we can say EITHER:
It was late, so I decided to take a taxi home
OR:
His wife left him. As a result, he became very depressed
